How to get the most out of a hair salon in Austin
A few months ago, the owners of a local salon told me about a potential solution to their hair salon woes.
The problem: it was a pain in the ass.
They had to go back to the drawing board.
“We were struggling to find new ideas,” the owners, Dana and Mike, told me.
“There wasn’t anything that was really out there for the ladies that was working with hair in a professional setting.”
So they came up with an idea.
“It was about doing our hair at home and then moving into a salon,” Dana said.
The idea was that it would be easier to work in the salon and make a difference, she said.
“I’ve had this feeling that the best way to get my hair done is to go home and do my hair and then come back here and do it there.”
The idea caught on, and now, with salon owners all over the country scrambling to find a way to stay competitive, Dana is convinced that the next generation of hairstylists will look at a salon as a place to start and then go home to do their hair, instead of having to leave the salon in search of a new one.
It’s a good thing, too, because the cost of living is soaring, and as we discussed in the podcast, the amount of time people spend working in a salon is also on the rise.
And while the average cost of a haircut is about $100 per hour, many hairstylist’s are charging as much as $300 per hour to have their clients do their hairstyles at home.
But Dana and her husband, Mike, say that’s the best solution.
“For a salon to survive, you need to be able to afford it,” Dana explained.
“A salon that’s just taking a little bit of time away from the hair and making it available for the customers to do, then you can survive.”
And while that’s certainly true, the salon owners aren’t the only ones to feel the pinch of cost in the industry.
“If you don’t have enough time to spend doing the hair, you’re going to have to spend a little extra money on your own hair,” Dana added.
“You’re going’t have the time to invest in quality hair care, and you’re not going to be a better stylist.”
